Peaks of Technologies
In the early
19th century mechanical engg. was at its peak and then slowly electronics took
over. Definitely its computers now and the peak of optical computer and then
finally quantum computers and physics again will have its peak. It is always
advisable to be at the rising edge of the peak so that when the technology
reaches its peak we will be experts by then and our profession will be in
demand. Also we need to make sure that our field is so vast that we shall not
get bored working in that field throughout our life. So its a big decision
choosing ones field of interest. Some of the current peaks in technologies are
wireless networks. But as I said we don’t want to be at the peak but at the
rising edge of the peak. Artificial Intelligence and Computer vision are on the
rising edges of the peak. U will not be surprised to see the number of
companies increasing in these fields. Genetic algorithms are at the bottom of
the rising edge and will take another 20yrs to mature so we don’t want to do
that either.
Wavelets is vast field..used in DSP..seismology, chemistry, statistics, astronomy, economics, computer vision, graphics...the possibilities are endless. So even if u get bored in one field u can move on to different field of applications of wavelets. That’s why I choose image processing and wavelets. I have the option of going back to DSP or Computer vision or AI anytime without much difficulty because all these fields are closely linked. So I would suggest you taking a project with Image Processing/ Wavelets.
